人々を幸福にすること in short
A young wife is shut out of her husband's busy life and decides to enter it. Cicily Hamilton starts with a ridiculous club and a stolen presidency. She then turns her idle energy to her husband's tobacco box factory, which is under attack by a trust, and she keeps getting in trouble with the best of motives.
What 人々を幸福にすること is about
What happens when a bored young bride, who has never run a meeting, becomes president of a ladies club by declaring herself elected? Cicily Hamilton does exactly that in the first chapter of this comedy, and the trouble she starts follows her through every page.
Thompson Buchanan wrote this New York story of marriage when American women argued over votes, work and what a wife is for. Cicily's husband Charles runs a tobacco box factory and forgets their anniversary. She decides to share his business. You get a quick, talky farce with a real question underneath: can a marriage work if only one partner has a working life?
対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy brisk social comedy, strong-willed heroines, rows over who runs the house and the office, and a picture of New York in the days of suffragettes and trusts.

A bored bride seizes a club by accident
The novel opens in Cicily's drawing room, where twelve women meet to found the Civitas Society for the Uplift of Woman. Nobody knows how a club works. The bride pounds her gavel and gets only noise, until she threatens never to speak to any of them again.
The guests make a lively set. Mrs. Flynn is an English suffragette who knows the inside of almost every police station in London. Helen Johnson trades sly insults with Cicily, because Helen once tried to win Charles.
The election is pure farce. Mrs. Morton nominates Mrs. Carrington, and Helen answers by nominating Mrs. Flynn. Two women claim the office, and neither will give way. Cicily, tired of choosing, declares herself president.
Her speech has an idea inside it. Machines and servants took away women's work, so women must now find a place in the world outside the home. Idleness is what drives Cicily into action. Idle hands go looking for a purpose.
