Lord Jim in short

Lord Jim is the story of one decision and its long shadow. A young officer who has always seen himself as a hero fails at the moment of proof, then spends years looking for a place where the failure cannot find him. Marlow tries to understand and cannot, but he never stops caring.

What Lord Jim is about

What does a man do when he has dreamed of heroism all his life and then, at the one moment that counts, jumps? That question drives Lord Jim, a novel by Joseph Conrad, who spent years at sea himself.

It follows a young sailor, tidy, strong and well liked, who sees himself as a hero in a book. Most of the tale is told aloud by a sea captain named Marlow, who cannot stop wondering about Jim. You get the whole arc, from the rusty steamer Patna to the far forest country of Patusan, where the people call him Tuan Jim.

対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy sea stories, moral puzzles and characters you keep turning over in your mind. It suits anyone fascinated by honour, shame and second chances.

A boy dreams of heroism he has never tested

Jim grows up in a country parsonage, the son of a clergyman. After reading adventure stories, he chooses the sea and is sent to a training ship. He does well there, and everyone likes him. He looks every inch a future captain.

On the lower deck he lives in daydreams. He sees himself rescuing drowning people and keeping up the spirits of despairing men in an open boat. Then a winter gale blows up at dusk, and the boys rush to man a cutter. Jim stands frozen at the rail, awed by the storm, and the boat pulls away without him.

Afterward he broods alone, feeling defeated and regretting that the storm had awed him. He decides the gale was a false threat he could have faced with ease. He is certain of his courage without ever having proved it, and he rises to chief mate with a spotless record. Jim is not a liar, for he truly believes in his own bravery. A courage that has never been tested is only a hope.

A young sailor named Jim jumps from a damaged ship carrying pilgrims. Haunted by shame, he tries to hide, then finds a new life in a remote forest district. A captain named Marlow tells the tale.

Who is Marlow in Lord Jim?

Marlow is a thoughtful merchant captain who attends Jim's inquiry and befriends him. He tells most of the story aloud, adding his own doubts and guesses, and also appears in other Conrad works.

It is a novel, but it draws on real events at sea in Conrad's time. Conrad, who had worked as a sailor, knew the ports and ships he describes.

What is the main message of Lord Jim?
