The Acts of Philip in short
The Acts of Philip is an episode-by-episode adventure about an apostle sent to preach in cities that worship idols, serpents and wealth. Philip heals the sick, raises the dead, argues with philosophers and priests, and stands up to a dragon. His sister Mariamne and Bartholomew walk with him, and Jesus sends them partly to keep Philip's temper in check.
What The Acts of Philip is about
What would you do if a leopard walked out of the wilderness, fell at your feet, and began to speak in a human voice? That is the scene waiting for Philip, one of the twelve apostles, on his road through the land of the Ophiani, the people who worship the serpent.
The Acts of Philip is an anonymous early Christian narrative, written in Greek and handed down in several forms. Scholars place its main material around the fourth century. It belongs to the apocryphal acts, stories that follow apostles on journeys the New Testament leaves unwritten. Along the way you meet a stubborn high priest, a wife who tests her husband's guest, and a hero whose temper worries even Jesus. Your first stop is Philip's encounter with a grieving widow.

Philip meets Athens and a furious high priest
The story opens on a road. A widow carries her only son out for burial, and she tells Philip she has spent a fortune on the gods for nothing. Philip raises the boy in the name of Jesus. The young man sits up and follows the apostle.
Then Philip enters Athens. Three hundred philosophers gather, because they take him for a wise man. They say they want something new, and Philip answers that they must first cast away the old man, since new wine does not belong in old wineskins.
The philosophers write to Ananias, the high priest in Jerusalem. He arrives with five hundred men and calls Philip a sorcerer. When he rushes to strike the apostle, his hand withers, and he and all his men go blind. Philip prays, and the heavens open. Jesus appears in glory, and the idols of Athens fall. Philip restores the sight of Ananias, who calls it magic. Then the earth swallows Ananias to the knees, and he cries out that it is magic and says he will not believe.
The crowd wants to stone him, but Philip holds them back. He offers to bring Ananias up if he repents. Mercy and force pull against each other in Philip from the very start.

How it ends (spoiler)
In Hierapolis Philip is rebuked for his unforgiving wrath. Jesus tells him he will die in glory but wait forty days outside paradise, then enter. Philip asks to be buried in papyrus and tells the church to be built where he falls. He dies, a vine grows, and Stachys becomes bishop. Bartholomew goes to Lycaonia and Mariamne to the Jordan. The final scenes show Peter and Andrew converting Onesiphorus and a woman who turns her house into a convent, and they consecrate a church.

Who wrote the Acts of Philip and when?
