The Acts of Peter and Simon in short

The story follows two apostles into the capital of the world. Paul sails toward Rome under a ban, loses a friend to mistaken identity and sees a city sink. He is welcomed by Peter, calms a quarrel between Jewish and Gentile believers, and watches Simon grow jealous and loud.

What The Acts of Peter and Simon is about

What happens when a man who claims to be the Son of God promises to rise into the sky above Rome, while two apostles stand below and watch him? That is the scene this story builds toward. It is a public contest between a sorcerer and the followers of Jesus, with the emperor Nero as judge and a whole city as audience.

The Acts of Peter and Simon belongs to the old family of tales about the apostles, often called the apocryphal acts. Its author is unknown. It follows Peter and Paul in Rome and their enemy Simon Magus, the Samaritan magician who first appears in the New Testament book of Acts. You get a swift narrative with a ship, a beheading by mistake, a sunken city, a loaf of bread and a pack of phantom dogs. You also get a question early readers cared about deeply. When two people both work wonders, how do you tell whose power is real?

対象読者. This book suits readers who love ancient adventure, early Christian stories, tales of rival wonder-workers and scenes in Nero's court. It also rewards anyone curious about how the first Christians thought about miracles, magic and trust.

Paul sails toward a Rome that fears him

The story opens with Paul leaving an island and heading for Italy. He has asked to be heard by Caesar, and the news runs ahead of him to Rome. The Jews of the city fall into grief. They say Paul has already afflicted their families in Judea and Samaria, and now he has come to destroy them here.

So they act. They gather many gifts and carry them to the emperor Nero with a petition. They ask him to send orders through every province so that Paul is kept away from Italy. They complain about Peter too, whose preaching weighs on them. Nero agrees. Simon the magician is told not to come into the regions of Italy as well.

Meanwhile the Romans baptized through Peter send elders to Paul with a letter. They greet him as the brother of Peter, the first of the apostles. They have heard that his enemies want him dead wherever he is found. God does not separate the two great lights he has made, they write, so he will not part Peter from Paul. The story wants its audience to see the two apostles as one team.

Paul sets out at once. The route is given stop by stop, through Syracuse, Messina and on to Puteoli. At Messina he ordains a bishop. The list of ports gives the tale the feel of a real voyage.

The contest in Rome begins long before the arena, in petitions, rumors and the loyalty of friends.

『The Acts of Peter and Simon』についての質問

What is The Acts of Peter and Simon about?

It tells how Peter and Paul meet in Rome and face the sorcerer Simon Magus before the emperor Nero. The contest tests whose wonders come from God and whose are tricks, and it ends with the apostles' deaths.

Who was Simon Magus?

Simon Magus is a Samaritan magician who appears in the New Testament book of Acts, where he offers money for spiritual power. Later Christian writers made him the great rival of the apostles, and this story shows him in Rome.

Is The Acts of Peter and Simon in the Bible?

No. It belongs to the apocryphal acts of the apostles. Early Christians read such tales for devotion and entertainment, but church leaders later kept them out of the New Testament, partly because their authors and dates were uncertain.

Is the story of Peter and Simon in Rome true?

It is a legend, written well after the apostles' time by an unknown author. Peter and Paul are linked by tradition with Rome and Nero, but the wonders, such as flying and moving statues, belong to storytelling.

What is the main message of the story?

The story asks how to tell real spiritual power from a counterfeit. It answers that true authority is humble, accountable and based on love and a plain teaching, while show and boasting lead nowhere.
