The Acts of Barnabas in short

The Acts of Barnabas picks up where the New Testament leaves off. Paul and Barnabas quarrel over John Mark, part in tears, and go separate ways. Barnabas sails for Cyprus with Mark, teaching and baptizing along the coast.

What The Acts of Barnabas is about

What happens to a good man when the New Testament stops following him? Barnabas is the generous friend who vouches for Paul and then quarrels with him over a young helper named John Mark. After that, the canonical Acts lets him slip out of sight. One ancient text follows him home.

The Acts of Barnabas is an anonymous Greek work, most likely shaped in the late fourth or fifth century. It is told in the voice of Mark, who claims to be an eyewitness. You get a bitter parting, a sea voyage, an island crossed town by town, and a rival who keeps appearing ahead of the travelers.

The story in 7 parts

Mark begins as a convert with a new name

The story opens in the voice of a man who says he saw it all. He gives his name as John, and he says he traveled with the apostles Barnabas and Paul. He writes because the mysteries he has heard and seen should be set down for others.

Before he met the apostles, John served Cyrillus, the high priest of Jupiter, so he knows the old temple world from the inside. Paul, Barnabas and Silas baptize him in Iconium. He is a convert who has crossed from one world into another, and that gives his later judgments on idols and festivals their edge.

Right after the baptism, John sees a man standing before him in white clothing. The figure tells him to be of good courage and says his name will be changed to Mark. It adds that the darkness in him has passed. Terrified, John runs and falls at the feet of Barnabas.

Barnabas answers with calm authority and tells the young man to keep the miracle to himself. He says the servant at his side carries mysteries that must one day be spoken. This gives Barnabas a private bond with John that Paul does not share.

A new name and a hidden task mark the start of Mark's real service.

『The Acts of Barnabas』についての質問

What is the Acts of Barnabas about?

It follows Barnabas after his parting from Paul. He sails to Cyprus with John Mark, teaches, baptizes and heals, appoints a bishop, and meets opposition from a Jew named Barjesus as he crosses the island toward Salamis.

Who wrote the Acts of Barnabas and when?

The author is unknown. The narrator calls himself John Mark, but scholars see an anonymous Greek text from the late fourth or fifth century, which may preserve older traditions and which served the church of Cyprus.

Why is the Acts of Barnabas not in the Bible?

It arose several centuries after the apostles and was not among the books the churches settled on as scripture. It belongs to the New Testament apocrypha, writings that early communities still read and copied with devotion.

Is the Acts of Barnabas a true story?

It is a legendary account mixing tradition with storytelling. Barnabas and Mark are known from the New Testament, and many place names are real, but scholars cannot confirm the details of the journey independently.

Why does Barnabas carry the Gospel of Matthew?

In the story, Barnabas received it from Matthew. He reads from it in synagogues and lays it on the sick, who are healed, so it serves as both a teaching text and a sign of power.
