イニシャルのみ in short

The book is a contest between patient detectives and a man who may be guilty of two impossible deaths. A heiress falls in a crowded hotel room with a thin wound and no weapon. A washerwoman dies in a locked room across a courtyard.

What イニシャルのみ is about

A gentleman in a fur-trimmed coat bends at the curb on a snowy Broadway and scrubs his hands with snow. Moments later a young heiress lies dead in a hotel writing room, scarlet poinsettias on her ivory gown and no weapon anywhere.

How can anyone kill a woman in a lit room, with a family reading a few steps away? Initials Only is a detective novel by Anna Katharine Green, who helped make the form popular in America. Her plots turn on plain rooms and fair clues. You get a sealed-room puzzle, a second death much like the first, and a contest between an aging detective and a very clever man.

対象読者. This book suits readers who love classic detective puzzles, impossible crimes and clever disguises, and who enjoy a rival pair of minds circling each other in a turn-of-the-century setting.

The story in 7 parts

Two strangers watch a man wash his hands

The story opens on a bitterly cold winter night on Broadway. Laura and George Anderson, a married couple, push through a crowd of theatergoers on their way to visit a friend. They smile at the odd scraps of talk one hears in the street.

Then they see a tall, handsome gentleman step out of the Clermont Hotel and hurry around a corner. He wears a silk hat and an overcoat trimmed with black fur. He bends to the curb and washes his hands in the snow. He does it with such energy that Laura jokes about Pilate. George does not smile. He does not like the man's face.

A roar rises behind them. A crowd is packing the hotel entrance, and people whisper that the beautiful Miss Challoner, a millionairess in her own right, has died suddenly. George's friend Slater, the assistant manager, gets the couple in through the back door. Laura faints from the crush and the cold.

When she wakes she learns the rest. Edith Challoner fell on the mezzanine after stepping away from the desk where she had been writing. The couple look across the lobby and see her laid on a couch in ivory satin with red poinsettias at her breast. Her doctor points at the flowers in horror, and drops of blood show that this was no illness. George decides he must tell the police what he saw.

Laura tells the story herself, and she is honest about her curiosity. A small odd detail, noticed at the right moment, can open a whole case.
