インド物語 in short

Indian Tales is a collection of short stories set in British India in the late nineteenth century. The stories move from the barracks to the hill stations, from the mines to the old city, and from the nursery to the mountains beyond the frontier. A few characters return, above all Mulvaney, Ortheris and Learoyd.

What インド物語 is about

What would you think of a bank clerk, twenty years old, who describes a Greek galley battle down to the way the sea stands still along the rail, when he has seen the ocean only once, at Brighton? Charlie Mears opens Indian Tales, and his strange memories set the mood for the book. Ordinary people brush against things they cannot explain, and the reader decides how much to believe.

Rudyard Kipling wrote these stories as a young newspaperman in India. They cover barracks and bazaars, hill stations and coal mines, nurseries and haunted rest houses. You get Private Mulvaney, Private Ortheris and Private Learoyd, a colonel's small son, two drifters who would be kings, and an old rebel on a city wall. Start with Charlie Mears and the story he cannot write.

対象読者. If you enjoy short stories with strong voices, soldiers' talk, ghost tales and glimpses of British India, this book gives you all of them, with jokes and sorrow on the same page.

The story in 10 parts

A bank clerk remembers a ship he never sailed

The collection opens with The Finest Story in the World. Charlie Mears is twenty, lives in north London with his widowed mother, and works in a bank. He writes bad poetry and dreams of an immortal name. One evening he brings the narrator an idea for a story about a galley slave.

The narrator buys the idea, and then Charlie keeps talking. He describes the oars, the chained rowers, the overseer with his whip and the rotten figs the men eat. He has read nothing on galleys, and he has seen the sea once. A Greek expert at the British Museum reads his sheet of scratches as very bad Greek, a complaint of weariness. Now the narrator understands that Charlie is remembering a life he lived long ago.

Charlie would rather read Longfellow, and a verse of a Viking saga wakes a vivid dream of his own drowning. A young Bengali law student, Grish Chunder, shrugs and says such memories fade. Some knowledge sleeps in people who cannot use it, and a writer must catch it before it goes.

How it ends (spoiler)

The collection ends with Private Ortheris in the grip of a fit of longing for London. He wants to leave the army, and Mulvaney tries to hold him back while the narrator makes a plan. The three friends stay together in the end, and the mood passes. The book closes not on a battle but on loyalty, with the three soldiers still bound to one another.
