私は報いる in short
I Will Repay is the story of a promise made at the worst possible moment. A child watches her brother brought home dead and swears to ruin the man who killed him. Ten years later, in the Paris of the Terror, she walks into his house and meets a man who is gentle, brave and in love with her.
What 私は報いる is about
What would you do if you swore, at fourteen, over your dead brother's body, to bring down the man who killed him? Now picture that you find him ten years later, and he is the kindest man in Paris. Worse, you are starting to love him.
That is the knot at the heart of I Will Repay, a novel of the French Revolution by Baroness Orczy, the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel. The book opens in Paris in 1783 and leaps to 1793, the year of the Terror, when a single anonymous note can destroy a life. You get a love story, a plot to save a queen, and a close look at a city that has lost its mind. You also get a moral question: can a promise made in grief bind a person to do wrong?
対象読者. Readers who love swashbuckling romance, the French Revolution, secret plots and daring rescues will feel at home here. It suits anyone who enjoys honor, faith, jealousy and love colliding.

A quarrel over a lady ends in death
The story begins in Paris in 1783, in a famous gaming room. The young Vicomte de Marny, rich, spoiled and drunk on wine, is infatuated with a notorious beauty. When a man named Paul Déroulède shrugs at her name, the boy throws cards in his face and calls him a coward.
Déroulède is the outsider in that room. His wealth has bought him a place among nobles, but he has few friends. He sees his blunder too late and would gladly apologize. The stiff code of honor forbids it. In the duel he is the better swordsman and only wants to disarm the boy. But the shamed Vicomte demands more, and in a reckless lunge he falls dead on the older man's blade.
Orczy shows a gentle man forced by custom into a killing he never wanted. She also names guests in that room who will die on the guillotine within a few years. The world of fine manners is already doomed, and no one can see it. A harm done without malice can still echo for years.
