ヒュペーリオン in short
Hyperion follows a grieving young American, Paul Flemming, as he travels through Germany, Switzerland and Austria. There he meets Mary Ashburton and offers her his love. The road then carries him through fever and loneliness toward a hard-won calm.
What ヒュペーリオン is about
Can a journey heal a broken heart? Paul Flemming, a young American scholar, hopes so. His friend of youth is dead, so he crosses to Europe and travels the Rhine in the grey of December.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published this romance in 1839. He wrote it as a poet and Harvard teacher who had lost his first wife while travelling in Europe, and the book carries that sorrow openly. It mixes story, travel sketch, legend and lively talk about books. Take the road with Flemming, where a man in mourning looks at a river and sees only his own heart.
対象読者. Readers who love travel writing woven with romance, castles, legends and mountain scenery will enjoy this book. It also suits those drawn to poetry, or seeking gentle company in a time of loss.

Grief sends Paul Flemming up the Rhine
Paul Flemming begins the book as a man whose world has gone dim. The friend of his youth is dead, and the places they shared now hurt to look at. He leaves America so that a sea may lie between him and the grave. The narrator tells us at once that no sea can lie between him and sorrow, except the sea of time.
The first scene is set at Rolandseck on a damp December morning. Flemming has not slept, so he opens the balcony window and listens to the river rushing past. He sees none of it, because his own sadness fills his sight.
At Andernach an old woman at the inn tells him of the Christ of Andernach. A stranger with a ladder and a lantern mends the roofs and gates of the poor by night, and nobody can say who he is. The tale shakes Flemming and shows him the power of popular belief.
Grief colours everything a person sees, and an old tale can give it somewhere to rest.

『ヒュペーリオン』についての質問
What is Hyperion by Longfellow about?
It follows Paul Flemming, a grieving American scholar who travels through Germany, Switzerland and Austria. He meets friends, hears legends, discusses poets and falls in love with Mary Ashburton, while slowly searching for peace after loss.
Is Hyperion a true story?
It is a romance, not a diary. Longfellow published it in 1839 after losing his first wife on a European journey. Many readers see his own feelings in Flemming, but the people and events are shaped as fiction.
Who are Berkley and the Baron in Hyperion?
The Baron of Hohenfels is Flemming's gentle German friend in Heidelberg. Berkley is a cheerful, eccentric Englishman who joins Flemming in Switzerland. Both offer different kinds of company and different attitudes toward sorrow.
Why is the book called Hyperion?
Hyperion is the name of an ancient Greek Titan, a son of Heaven and Earth. Near the start of the last book, the narrator compares noble people, such as Washington and William Tell, to Hyperion, as figures of high purpose.
Is Hyperion easy to read today?
Its short chapters, lively conversations, travel scenes and inset songs make it approachable. You can read it a chapter at a time, enjoy the scenery and legends, and follow Flemming's feelings as the journey unfolds.
