オズモンド公爵閣下 in short

The book follows a man who is born to everything and who spends years learning that none of it matters without the right companion. Gerald Mertoun grows up believing that power means duty. When he meets Clorinda Wildairs, a loyalty to an old friend stands between them.

What オズモンド公爵閣下 is about

It is the fifth day of April, 1676, and church bells ring in five villages because a duke has an heir. Years later in another county, a newborn girl lies beneath her dead mother, unwanted by a father who would rather ride to the hunt.

His Grace of Osmonde is a historical romance by Frances Hodgson Burnett, best known for her stories for children. Here she writes for grown readers and follows Gerald Mertoun, later Duke of Osmonde, from the cradle through three reigns. The heart of the book is one man's wait for one woman. You will meet rakes, gossips, a kind old Earl and a wild beauty named Clorinda Wildairs.

対象読者. Readers who love sweeping historical romance, courtly manners and Stuart London gossip will enjoy this book. It rewards those drawn to honor, restraint and steadfast devotion.

The story in 10 parts

Bells ring for a duke's heir

The story opens at Camylott, a village in the shadow of a great house called the Tower. The villagers drink ale and wait for news from the White Chamber, where the young Duchess is in labour. When the messenger gallops in, the bells peal out. An heir is born, Gerald Mertoun.

His parents love each other deeply, and the whole book measures later love against theirs. His head nurse, Mistress Halsell, a plain chaplain's widow, looks at the baby with a grave respect, as if he were already a man.

One day the boy overhears gossip about the King's gold gifts to a French mistress and asks why people prefer Madame Ellen. Mistress Halsell tells him that all people look to a king as an example, and that he can lead them toward honesty or baseness.

From his first years, the hero learns that rank is a trust to be answered for.
