ヘレナ in short
Helena follows a household changed by one clause in a will. A daughter arrives, wins over a strict aunt and a serious brother, and becomes the center of the family. Around her, a cold doctor plots a marriage and a career, a friend returns from Paris, and a priest tries to keep everyone kind.
What ヘレナ is about
Councillor Vale dies on an April evening in 1859, just before his usual card game. That night the family doctor opens the desk, finds the will, and warns that it may hold a mistake. The next day the household learns that the councillor has recognized a daughter. What does a family owe a stranger who joins it by law and not by choice?
Helena is a novel by Machado de Assis, the Brazilian writer who died in 1908. It is set in Rio de Janeiro in 1859 and 1860, in drawing rooms, on morning rides, and in letters that hide a secret under every polite scene. You meet a serious young heir, his strict aunt, a cold doctor, a gentle priest, a vain fiancée and a cheerful friend just back from Paris.

A sudden death and a surprising will
Councillor Vale dies of a stroke at seven in the evening. He belonged to neither political party, had friends in both, and leaves a son, Estácio, and a sister, Dona Úrsula.
After the funeral the family doctor, Camargo, finds the will in the locked desk. His eyes flash for an instant before his calm returns. He warns the mourners that the paper may hold an omission or a serious excess, then refuses to say more.
The next day the will is opened. Most of it is ordinary, with gifts to friends and Masses for the dead. One clause is not. The councillor recognizes a natural daughter named Helena and asks the family to take her in as if she had been born of his marriage. Camargo calls this an excess of tenderness and says he tried to talk the councillor out of it. Why he cares so much stays open.
A single clause in a will can change who counts as family.

How it ends (spoiler)
Helena's secret is explained. The man at the old house is her true father, Salvador, and not the counselor. The counselor had knowingly taken on the role of Helena's father. Estácio, told by Melchior, realizes he loves her, and she loves him. The family keeps her place, but Salvador vanishes to protect her. Helena, broken by shame and longing, falls ill after standing in the rain and dies. Estácio is left grieving beside the priest.
