ヘレン・ヴァードンの告白 in short
A night at Lyon's Inn and a second inquest turn her private fears into a public case. You keep a clear picture of how coercion works, how a promise made under pressure can run on for months, and how a hidden wish can feel like guilt. You also keep the coroner's patient building of a case, where true facts are arranged to point the wrong way.
What ヘレン・ヴァードンの告白 is about
Helen Vardon is leaving the book room when she hears a visitor tell her father that he faces seven years of penal servitude.
Helen Vardon's Confession was written by R. Austin Freeman, best known for his Dr Thorndyke stories.

A few overheard words break a peaceful home
On an April afternoon in 1908, Helen Vardon lives in Maidstone with her father William, a solicitor. Passing the study, she hears a visitor named Otway speak of seven years of penal servitude.
Mr Otway is a trustee. He says William Vardon was given five thousand pounds of trust money, lent it to a friend, and cannot repay it. He will take on the debt if he may marry Helen. Her father refuses at once and says he would rather go to jail than sacrifice his daughter.
Her father once told her he would end his life sooner than live in disgrace. That evening they work on a bronze coal scuttle, and he jokes about the day they are sold up. At supper he kisses her good night and goes out. Helen snatches her hat and cloak and runs into the dark.
When fear for someone you love takes hold, even a jest can ring like a farewell.

How it ends (spoiler)
At the adjourned inquest Dr Thorndyke proves that Lewis Otway never hanged himself from the peg. He died of nicotine poison, and the jury names Mrs Gregg, really Rachel Goldstein, as his murderer. Helen learns that her fear of having caused his death was groundless, and she is cleared of all suspicion. With Otway gone, the legal obstacle between her and Jasper Davenant is removed.
