森の日々 in short

Forest Days is a story of England in 1265, when a weak king and a strong earl struggle for the country. Robin Hood, here a yeoman outlaw serving the English cause, helps the Earl of Monthermer and his nephew Hugh. Hugh loves Lucy de Ashby, whose father and brother later desert De Montfort for the royal party.

What 森の日々 is about

What if the famous outlaw of Sherwood did not live under Richard the Lionheart at all? G. P. R. James puts Robin Hood a generation later, in the reign of Henry the Third, when England is torn between a weak king and the great Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort.

Forest Days is a historical romance built on real events, from the escape of Prince Edward to the battle of Evesham in 1265.

対象読者. You will enjoy this if you love Robin Hood and Sherwood, medieval England with real kings and battles, knights in love, loyal outlaws, and old-fashioned tales full of songs, feasts and sudden rescues.

The story in 12 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A village inn and a false hunchback

The story begins at a wooden inn beside a village green near Pontefract. A hunchbacked ploughman named Hardy sits over a jug of Bordeaux wine.

A rider approaches the inn, Thomas Blawket, servant of the Earl of Monthermer. Richard de Ashby, a dark and handsome kinsman of the Earl of Ashby, arrives with other nobles, and his servants pick a quarrel with the hunchback. The old man knocks one down without leaving his stool.

Next morning, in the forest, Hardy unbuckles his padded hump and stands up strong, quick and merry. He has seen three golden leopards under one servant's coat, the arms of the King, so the man is a royal spy.

Look past the surface, for in this story a disguise often hides the truest person in the room.

『森の日々』についての質問

What is Forest Days about?

It follows Hugh de Monthermer, a knight in the reign of Henry the Third, who loves Lucy de Ashby. Robin Hood and his outlaws help the English cause while a scheming cousin plots against the family.

When is Forest Days set, and is it a true story?

It is set in 1265, around the escape of Prince Edward and the battle of Evesham. The wars, kings and De Montfort are historical, but Hugh, Lucy, Kate and Richard are invented.

Is Robin Hood in Forest Days the same as in the ballads?

He keeps the green clothes, the horn, the archers and Little John, but James places him in the 1260s, not under Richard the Lionheart, as a yeoman outlawed for backing De Montfort.

Who is Tangel in Forest Days?

Long-armed and highly agile, Tangel is a dwarf in Robin's household. He loves Hugh and Robin, jokes constantly, carries messages, and plays a vital part in a night escape.

What is the main message of Forest Days?

The book shows that honour, loyalty and courage matter more than rank. It also celebrates free English life and shows how truth can survive plots, disguises and false accusations.
