信号手ティール in short

In Flagman Thiel, a gentle, devout railway worker marries again for the sake of his frail son, and the new wife takes over the house. Thiel hides his deepest loyalty in a forest hut that he treats as a chapel for his dead first wife. His passivity toward Lene leaves Tobias unprotected.

What 信号手ティール is about

What happens to a quiet man when the one place he keeps holy is claimed by someone else? Every Sunday, Thiel, a railway flagman in the pine forests near Berlin, sits in the church at Neu-Zittau with his buttons polished and his red hair neatly parted. He keeps a secret: his lonely forest hut belongs to the memory of his dead wife Minna.

Flagman Thiel is a novella by Gerhart Hauptmann, the German dramatist linked with the naturalist movement. The volume also holds The Apostle, about a young man in a white robe who walks out of Zurich on Pentecost, sure he will bring peace to the world. You enter two minds under pressure and stay there.

対象読者. You will enjoy this if you like psychological fiction, close portraits of ordinary people, vivid forests and railways, and stories that follow one mind from calm to storm.

Thiel's second marriage gives the house to Lene

Thiel is a big, red-haired man who never misses church at Neu-Zittau unless he is on duty or ill. He lives in Schön-Schornstein, a small settlement on the river Spree. His first wife, a slight, sickly woman, dies in childbirth and leaves a frail boy named Tobias.

Within a year Thiel tells the pastor he must marry again. He says the boy will die without care. He also promised his dying wife that he would always look after the child. The new wife, Lene, is a strong, coarse farmhand with a domineering temper and a brutal passion. Within six months the whole village knows who rules the flagman's house.

The change in him is gradual. At first he stands firm whenever Tobias is concerned. Then even that firmness fades. He cannot leave for work after a quarrel until he has soothed her. His first marriage was a bond of the spirit. This one holds him through desire. When Lene bears a son of her own, her dislike of Tobias hardens into cruelty.

The neighbors curse behind their windows as the pale boy hauls his little brother down to the river. Thiel refuses to understand their hints. He is strong in body and ruled by a need he cannot name.

A gentle man who cannot say no to one person will fail the child who depends on him.

How it ends (spoiler)

Tobias is run over by the Silesian express while his stepmother is planting potatoes. He is brought back dead on the gravel train. Thiel loses his mind, kills Lene and her baby in the night, and is found sitting on the tracks where Tobias died, holding the boy's brown cap. He is taken to the Charité psychiatric ward. In The Apostle, the church bells ring, and the young man hears them as God the Father speaking with his Son.
