完結 in short

Finished follows Allan Quatermain from a Pretoria square in 1877 into the Zulu War. A simple buffalo hunt leads to an ambush, a house of smugglers, a love story and a killing, and then to a flight into Zululand. There the wizard Zikali uses the hunter and his friends to push a reluctant king into a war he fears.

What 完結 is about

What would you do if a stranger bet you fifty pounds that he would meet you again in eighteen months, in the same square, to hunt buffalo? Allan Quatermain takes the money, and that small deal pulls him into the last days of the Zulu kingdom.

H. Rider Haggard wrote Finished in 1916 and 1917 as the third book of a trilogy, and it stands alone. He kept to the main historical facts and added romance. You get a hunting trip that turns into a pursuit, a love story under threat, and a war planned by one old wizard.

対象読者. You will enjoy this if you like old-fashioned adventure told by a veteran hunter, or if pursuits, river crossings and ambushes draw you in.

The story in 10 parts

A casual bet in Pretoria sets everything moving

The story opens in Pretoria on April 12, 1877, the day Britain annexes the Transvaal. Allan Quatermain, an elephant hunter and trader, finds the square packed with cheering Englishmen and sullen, armed Boers. A friend warns him that one spark could set the veld on fire.

In the crowd he meets Maurice Anscombe, a sunburned young Englishman with a twinkle in his eye. That night Anscombe announces that he must shoot a buffalo in the Lydenburg district. Quatermain refuses, since his son needs an operation and a trading contract waits. Anscombe names a date, October 1, 1878, and writes a cheque for fifty pounds as a forfeit if either man fails.

Eighteen months later Quatermain finds Anscombe smoking on a hotel stoep with two wagons, ready to go. Quatermain agrees, though he knows the country near Sekukuni's land is dangerous. He says at the start that this pact leads to the sorrows of the tale. A small promise between two hunters carries a far larger price than either expects.

How it ends (spoiler)

Anscombe and Heda survive. After Nombé dies protecting Heda, they leave the Black Kloof, marry in Maritzburg and sail for England. Years later, at the kraal Jazi, Quatermain finds King Cetewayo dying, poisoned, and sees Zikali whisper curses over him. Quatermain flees, and the king dies. At dawn he overhears the wizard at a waterfall, giving thanks for his vengeance and saying the last Zulu king lies dead by his hand.

『完結』についての質問

What is Finished by H. Rider Haggard about?

It follows the hunter Allan Quatermain from the annexation of the Transvaal in 1877 to the Zulu War. A hunting trip draws him into a smugglers' feud, a love story, and the wizard Zikali's plan to destroy the Zulu royal house.

Do I need to read Marie and Child of Storm first?

No. Haggard says in his preface that the book can be read alone, although it is the third in a trilogy. Quatermain explains the earlier events as they matter, so you can follow the story from the first chapter.

Who is Zikali in Finished?

Zikali is an ancient Zulu wizard, a dwarf known as the Opener of Roads and the Thing-that-should-never-have-been-born. He hates the royal house of Senzangacona and uses his arts and spies to bring about its ruin.

Is Finished based on a true story?

Partly. Haggard follows real events such as the 1877 annexation of the Transvaal, the demands of Sir Bartle Frere and the battle of Isandhlwana. The wizard, the goddess on the rock and the main romance are his additions.

What does the title Finished mean?

Finished is the English meaning of Jazi, the name of a Zulu kraal. Haggard's preface connects the place with the end of the Zulu royal house, and the title points to the book's theme of vengeance reaching its limit.
