ダブリン市民 in short

Dubliners is a portrait of a city in fifteen scenes. Boys dream of escape, young people hover at a threshold, adults bargain, drink and daydream, and public life is a stage for pride and money. Every story is complete in itself, yet the whole book builds one picture of a place where wishes are strong and action is rare.

What ダブリン市民 is about

A boy walks past a lit window night after night, watching for the candlelight that will tell him a priest has died. He whispers one word to himself, paralysis, and it fills him with fear and a strange pull. That small scene opens Dubliners.

James Joyce wrote these fifteen stories as a young man, and the book appeared in 1914 after long trouble with printers and publishers. He wanted to show his native city exactly as it was, from childhood through youth and grown life to public life, ending with a Christmas party. Each tale is short, yet each holds a whole small world.

対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you like short stories packed with detail, city life with its pubs, offices and parlors, or the sound of Irish voices. It suits readers who love small moments turned into scenes that stay with you.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Three boys reach for escape and find disappointment

The book opens with three stories told by boys. In The Sisters, a boy hears that his old friend Father Flynn has died after a third stroke. In An Encounter, a boy and Mahony play truant for a day. In Araby, a boy burns with love for a neighbor girl and promises to bring her a gift from a bazaar.

At the wake, Eliza speaks haltingly about a broken chalice and the strange behavior that followed it. The adults circle the truth and never quite name it. In An Encounter, a shabby older man sits down beside the boys in a field, and his talk slowly turns into something that frightens the narrator.

In Araby, the boy watches Mangan's sister from behind a lowered blind, and the word Araby glows in his mind like an Eastern spell. But his uncle comes home late and forgetful, and the boy must travel alone by night. Childhood hopes in Dublin meet a world that cannot answer them.

How it ends (spoiler)

In the hotel room, Gretta tells Gabriel about Michael Furey, a boy she once knew in Galway who sang The Lass of Aughrim and died after standing in the rain outside her window. She falls asleep. Gabriel feels shame, then pity and a new understanding of love. He watches snow fall across Ireland and sees it covering the grave where Michael lies, falling on all the living and the dead.

『ダブリン市民』についての質問

What is Dubliners about?

Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories about ordinary people in Dublin around the start of the twentieth century. They move from childhood to youth, adult life and public life, showing hopes, small defeats and moments of insight.

What does paralysis mean in Dubliners?

Paralysis is the word the boy in The Sisters whispers, and it names the book's main idea. Many characters feel stuck by family, money, habit or religion, and cannot move toward the lives they want.

Is Dubliners a true story, and when was it written?

The stories are fiction, but they draw on real Dublin streets, pubs and customs. Joyce wrote them in his twenties, and the collection was published in 1914 after long delays with printers and publishers.

Do I need to read the stories in order?

Each story stands alone, so you can start anywhere. Reading in order shows Joyce's plan, which moves from childhood to youth, maturity and public life, and ends with The Dead, the longest and most reflective tale.

Why is The Dead so often singled out?

The Dead is the longest story and gathers the book's themes in one winter night: family, music, memory, pride and love. Its closing passage, with snow falling over Ireland, is among the most admired scenes in short fiction.
