悪魔学と悪魔伝承 in short

Conway's argument runs in one line. Early peoples saw the world as full of gods who gave both help and harm. When moral feeling grew and rival priesthoods fought, those powers were sorted into good and evil, and the losers became demons.

What 悪魔学と悪魔伝承 is about

A legend tells of three friars who hide near a Witches' Sabbath to count the devils. The chief devil finds them and says that if all the Alps were shared out among his army, each devil would get less than a pound's weight. Moncure Daniel Conway takes the joke seriously.

Demonology and Devil-Lore is his answer. Conway, an American writer who died in 1907, gathers myths from India, Persia, Egypt, Babylon, Scandinavia, Palestine and Christian Europe. His claim is simple. The thousands of demons fall into a few types, and each is built around a human pain such as hunger, disease or cruelty. You get a tour of dragons, vampires, witches and the Devil himself.

対象読者. Readers who enjoy comparative mythology, folklore and the history of religion will find rich material here. So will anyone curious about dragons, vampires, witches and Faust.

Evil began when a united heaven split

Conway opens with a piece of advice, orient thyself. To read old myths, he says, we must picture a world without scientific eyes, where the sun is a chariot and a spirit lives in every tree. Worship began with wonder at the sky, not with logs and stones.

The oldest hymns of the Rig-Veda are cheerful. Storm gods are praised beside the sun god, and one verse says no real foe is known in heaven. Conway calls this early pantheism the counterpart of ignorance. It is a mind that has not yet learned to tell good from evil.

Then the happy family quarrels. Once each power is tied to a pleasure or a pain, clouds become Titans and dragons, and faithful twilight watchdogs become hellhounds like Cerberus. Evil began when a united heaven split into friends and foes.

  2. 2

Every demon carries the trace of a god

Conway says early religion was largely the appeasement of powers that helped and harmed at once.

『悪魔学と悪魔伝承』についての質問

What is Demonology and Devil-Lore about?

It traces how demons, dragons, witches and the Devil arose from fear, nature and religious rivalry. Conway draws on myths from India, Persia, Egypt, Scandinavia, Palestine and Christian Europe, and argues that most demons began as gods.

What is the difference between a demon and a devil?

For Conway, a demon harms for a reason, like hunger or desire, and has no moral purpose. A devil loves evil for its own sake, an idea that needs a developed moral sense and appears much later.

What does Conway mean by saying demons were once gods?

He shows through names and stories that many demons carry traces of divine origin. Deva means god in India and devil in Persia, Lucifer means light-bearing, and Beelzebub began as Baal-zebub, a fly-god of the Philistines.

Is the book easy to follow?

Conway writes in a lively teaching voice and fills each chapter with short tales, such as the Lambton Worm, Luther's inkstand and the Devil's bridge at Ratisbon. Each chapter follows one theme, so you can follow the thread step by step.

What is the main message of the book?

Devils are human projections, made from fear of nature, the rivalry of religions and the struggle of conscience. Conway urges readers to understand where these figures came from, so that fear and persecution lose their power.
