ビュシー・ダンボワーズと『ビュシー・ダンボワーズの復讐』 in short
The two plays tell one story from opposite sides. In the first, a penniless soldier is lifted by a prince and sets the court on fire with his talent, his temper and his love for another man's wife. Rivals and a jealous husband close in, and his proud claim to be a king unto himself is tested to the limit.
What ビュシー・ダンボワーズと『ビュシー・ダンボワーズの復讐』 is about
A poor soldier lies on the ground in a forest glade. A prince walks up and tells him to rise. Within days that soldier is striding into the French court and courting the wife of its most powerful duke. How does a man rise so fast, and what does the rise cost him?
Bussy D'Ambois and its sequel, The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois, are two tragedies by George Chapman, who also translated Homer. The first play builds on a real swordsman at the court of Henry III. The second shifts to a brother whom Chapman invented. You get duels, secret lovers, spies, ghosts and a conjured demon, and you follow the arguments one scene at a time.

A poor soldier is lifted by a prince
The first play opens with Bussy D'Ambois alone and poor in a glade near the court. He speaks bitterly about a world where fortune, not reason, decides who rises. Great men, he says, are like colossal statues, grand outside and filled with mortar and lead within.
Monsieur, the king's brother, finds him there. Monsieur is ambitious, and he wants fierce men gathered around him. He urges Bussy to go to court. Bussy answers with a sharp portrait of court life, where a man learns to smile on command, flatter lords and hear crimes explained until he can commit them. Monsieur promises to send help.
Help arrives in Maffe, Monsieur's steward, who sneers as he hands over a thousand crowns. Bussy strikes him and drives him off, because he will not hear his patron's generosity belittled. Bussy is proud and quick with his hands, and Monsieur is buying a weapon.
A rise built on another man's purpose always carries a price.
