ベアトリス in short

Beatrice is the story of a rescue that becomes a bond. A schoolmistress with a sharp mind and no faith saves a barrister in a storm, and each finds in the other the companion that neither has at home. Around them stand a wife who loves rank, a squire who loves too hard, and a sister who loves his money.

What ベアトリス is about

Picture a girl alone in a canoe, lost in an autumn fog off the Welsh coast. She hears gunshots and paddles toward them. There she finds a barrister on a rock, cut off by the tide, trying to save a dead curlew.

Beatrice, by H. Rider Haggard, is a Victorian love story set in the Welsh seaside village of Bryngelly. It is also a book about money, gossip, faith and the price of a strict social code. You meet a clever schoolmistress, a married lawyer and a rich, silent squire, and you follow them to the point where their choices turn dangerous.

対象読者. If you enjoy Victorian romance with stormy seas, courtroom drama and a heroine with a sharp mind, this book is for you. It suits readers who love moral dilemmas and a love story where faith and doubt are argued aloud.

A Canoe Appears Out of the Mist

On her twenty-second birthday, Beatrice Granger stands on the Dog Rocks as mist settles over the bay. A mile up the coast, the London barrister Geoffrey Bingham sits on a stone, waiting for a dead curlew to drift closer. He forgot the tide, and now deep water cuts him off from land.

Beatrice hears his shots and paddles toward them. She picks the bird from the water and hands it up, and he is startled that she knows his name. She teaches at the school he visited with his wife the day before.

She tells him swimming is unsafe, because sharp rocks and a strong current fill the bay. Her double canoe can carry them both five miles home. Haggard builds the meeting from a bird, a tide and a canoe, and each returns later in the story. A chance favor between strangers can start a bond that lasts a lifetime.

『ベアトリス』についての質問

What is Beatrice by H. Rider Haggard about?

It follows a clever Welsh schoolmistress, Beatrice Granger, and a married barrister, Geoffrey Bingham, brought together by a canoe rescue in a storm. Their love, a jealous sister and a possessive squire drive a story about duty, faith and sacrifice.

Who is Owen Davies in Beatrice?

Owen Davies is the wealthy, silent squire of Bryngelly Castle, a former sailor who inherited his estate. He has loved Beatrice for years and presses her to marry him. His devotion mixes tenderness with religious certainty and growing jealousy.

Where is Beatrice set and when was it written?

The story takes place on the Welsh coast in the fictional village of Bryngelly, in the Victorian era, with scenes in London law courts and the House of Commons. Haggard wrote it as a romance of his own time, not a true story.

Is Beatrice easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that the story moves through clear scenes: a mist, a storm, a rescue, courtroom triumphs and a night of sleepwalking. A friendly narrator guides the reader, and lively dialogue keeps the characters distinct.

What is the main message of Beatrice?

The book shows that love tests every loyalty and that doubt can shift into hope through love. It also asks what we owe to marriage vows, to family and to conscience, and how cruelty often hides behind moral language.
