『自伝』 in short

The Autobiography follows one mind from a crowded schoolroom to a seat in Parliament. A father teaches Greek at three and demands reasoning at twelve. Bentham gives a creed, and then the crisis at twenty drains the purpose from it all.

What 『自伝』 is about

What happens to a mind trained from the cradle to reform the world, when it suddenly cannot feel any joy in that goal? John Stuart Mill asks that question about himself in his Autobiography. He begins Greek at three and reaches the edge of despair at twenty.

Mill finished this memoir late in life, and it appeared after his death in 1873. He writes it to show what a child can learn when taught well, to trace a mind that kept learning, and to thank those who shaped him, most of all his wife.

対象読者. Readers who love honest self-portraits, the history of ideas, and the making of a thinker will enjoy it. It also speaks to anyone curious about education, liberty, or recovery from a deep crisis.

A father turns childhood into a school

John Stuart Mill was born in London in 1806, the eldest son of James Mill. His father wrote the History of British India and also taught his children almost every day.

Mill began Greek at three, learning word lists his father wrote on cards. He did his lessons at the same table where his father worked, and he asked the meaning of every strange word. His father bore the interruptions, though Mill calls him one of the most impatient of men. By eight he had read Aesop, Xenophon, Herodotus and early Plato.

Between eight and twelve he went on to Virgil, Livy, Thucydides and Homer. Mill draws a plain lesson. If a boy of ordinary gifts could do this, the years schools waste are easy to see.

A child can hold far more learning than schools usually ask of him.

『『自伝』』についての質問

What is John Stuart Mill's Autobiography about?

It tells how Mill was educated by his father, how he took up Bentham's utilitarianism, how he suffered a mental crisis at twenty, and how he built a wider philosophy. It also covers his writings, his marriage and his time in Parliament.

Why did Mill have a mental crisis?

In 1826 he asked himself whether he would be happy if all his reforms came true and answered no. He blamed an education that stressed analysis over feeling. Reading Wordsworth and a new view of happiness helped him recover.

Who was Harriet Taylor in Mill's life?

Harriet Taylor was a close friend whom Mill met in 1830 and married in 1851. He credits her with shaping the ideas of Principles of Political Economy and On Liberty. He calls his later work the product of joint thought.

What is the main message of the Autobiography?

The book shows that a good education teaches a person to think, not just to memorize, and that happiness comes from aims beyond oneself. It also argues that feeling and reason both need cultivation, and that thinking grows through learning from others.

Is Mill's Autobiography easy to read?

Mill writes in clear, orderly prose and tells his life in chronological chapters. Famous scenes, such as his childhood Greek lessons and his recovery through Wordsworth, are vivid, and his reflections on his own mistakes are honest and direct.
