軍の先を行く in short

Ahead of the Army follows Ned Crawford, a New York boy sent to sea to learn the Mexican trade, into the middle of the Mexican-American War. He runs from warships on a ship full of powder, hides in a disguise, and lives in Mexico City among plotters and books. Then he crosses the lines and joins General Scott's army as a scout.

What 軍の先を行く is about

Imagine a boy of seventeen on the deck of a small bark in a gale, listening to two men talk about a war he has barely heard of. Below his feet lie barrels of gunpowder meant for the enemies of his own country.

William O. Stoddard wrote Ahead of the Army for young readers, and he meant it to win them over to Mexico and its people. It follows Ned Crawford of New York through the Mexican-American War, from the first guns on the Rio Grande to the march on Mexico City. Real figures walk through it, among them Grant, Lee, Scott and Santa Anna. You get a fast adventure and a lively picture of Mexico.

対象読者. Readers who love adventure with a real war behind it will enjoy this book. So will anyone curious about Mexico, or about Grant and Lee as young officers.

The story in 11 parts

Far-off guns start a war and a voyage

In May 1846 the sound of distant cannon rolls over the American camp at Point Isabel on the Texas coast. The guns come from a half-built fort on the Rio Grande. Officers gallop to General Taylor's tent, and the whole army longs to march.

In one small tent a short, strong second lieutenant wakes and cries out that the war has started. He is Ulysses Grant, and he has never heard an enemy cannon. Mexico says Texas ends at the Nueces River, while the United States says it reaches the Rio Grande, so each side calls the other the invader.

Then the scene jumps to the Gulf, where the bark Goshawk drives west in a gale. On deck stands Ned Crawford, near the grim English captain Kemp and a sharp-eyed Mexican named Zuroaga. Zuroaga says that President Paredes wants a war to stay in power, and that exiled Santa Anna wants one to come home. The war begins far from Ned, but its guns are already steering his ship.
