Agnes Grey in short

Agnes Grey is the story of a young woman who leaves a loving home to earn her own living, and who learns that the world is less kind than she hoped. Unruly children and blind parents defeat her at the Bloomfields. At Horton Lodge, the family wants polish without effort.

What Agnes Grey is about

What does a sheltered clergyman's daughter know about the world? Very little, and Agnes Grey is the first to admit it. At eighteen she begs her family to let her work as a governess, sure that kindness and good sense will carry her through any nursery.

This novel is by Anne Brontë, who died in 1849. Agnes tells the story herself, looking back in a plain and honest voice. She is paid to teach, yet given no power to punish and no respect from those who pay her. You meet spoiled children, blaming parents, vain young women, and one quiet man who notices her kindness.

対象読者. Readers who love a clear, honest narrator, quiet domestic drama, sharp portraits of Victorian households, and a young woman finding her own strength.

A happy parsonage meets a sudden loss

Agnes Grey grows up in a village parsonage in the north of England. Her father is a clergyman, her mother a squire's daughter who gave up her fortune to marry him. Theirs is a happy home, though never a rich one. Agnes is the youngest and the family pet, and she later admits that being spoiled left her ill prepared for hardship.

Her father worries about money. When a merchant friend promises to double his savings, he hands over everything. Then the news comes that the merchant's ship has sunk with all its cargo. The father never recovers from the blow, and his health fails.

The household shrinks. The carriage is sold, a servant is let go, and the candles are cut to one. Agnes finds that poverty does not frighten her. Yet her mother and sister cannot find her a task, because they think she is still a child.

Security can be a kind of cage, and a loss can open the door.
