アダムとイヴの楽園 in short

Taken as a whole, the book is a walk through human wants. We meet the first humans, shaped by fear and hunger. In the later tales we see their descendants chasing love, money, holiness and comfort, and often getting the wrong thing.

What アダムとイヴの楽園 is about

What does a man do when he climbs down from a tree and finds he is something new? Eça de Queirós opens this book with Adam, hairy, hungry and shaking with fear, stumbling toward Eden through swamps, beasts and a sea that roars.

Eça de Queirós, the Portuguese novelist who died in 1900, gathers twelve tales here, from the first days of mankind to a London hotel, a Spanish court and the island of Calypso. The tone is dry, playful and often tender.

対象読者. This book suits readers who like short stories with a sharp wit, a warm heart and a taste for myth, saints and knights. It rewards anyone who enjoys a storyteller who mixes laughter with real feeling.

The story in 10 parts

Adam climbs down and becomes human

Adam does not begin as a noble figure. The narrator quotes a learned bishop who dates his creation to an exact afternoon in October, and then smiles at that precision by showing a creature only just above the animals.

He grabs branches, growls at the scent of females, and falls onto all fours whenever a branch brushes him. Each fall, says the narrator, makes him a little more human. At the sea he flees the waves, then watches the last two giant reptiles of the old world fight on the sand. One lies dead, and hunger drives Adam to taste raw flesh. In this Eden the first great step is a meal of meat, not the fruit of a tree.

At night every beast gathers around his sleeping body, yet none dares to move, because a white Angel with a sword of fire stands guard. At dawn Adam wakes with a soft weight against his side, and she is Eve.

Eden here is a workshop where humanity is shaped by fear and appetite, not a garden of rest.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Adam The first man, a hairy, frightened creature who climbs down from a tree and slowly learns to hunt, make fire and protect his mate.
  • Eve Adam's partner, who tends the hearth, sews, tames a puppy and sows the first grain, and is the practical force behind early humanity.
  • Korriscosso A Greek poet working as a waiter in London, who writes odes in Greek and loves a maid who cannot read them.
  • Jacinto A wealthy young man surrounded by machines and books, who yawns through life until a trip to his mountain estate.
  • Macario A careful Lisbon bookkeeper who works, saves and sails abroad to marry the blond girl he loves.
  • Don Ruy de Cárdenas A bold, devout knight of Segovia who falls for a lord's wife and rides to Cabril, guided by a hanged man.
  • José Matías An elegant, dreamy Lisbon idealist who adores his neighbor Elisa from afar for ten years.
  • Ulysses The cunning hero of Troy, kept fat and idle by the goddess Calypso and longing to return home to Ithaca.

How it ends (spoiler)

In Adam and Eve in Paradise the couple are left sitting by their fire, now truly human, while the narrator wonders if they should have stayed in the trees. Jacinto finds happiness in the simple mountain life and leaves his machines to rust. Ulysses sails away from perfection toward storms and home. In The Gentle Miracle, Jesus himself arrives at the hut and tells the sick child he is there. Other tales end in death, loss or a grim moral.

『アダムとイヴの楽園』についての質問

What is Adam and Eve in Paradise by Eça de Queirós about?

It is a collection of twelve tales by the Portuguese writer. It begins with a comic retelling of Adam and Eve as early humans, then moves through stories of love, greed, faith and comfort in different times and places.

Which stories are in the collection?

Besides the title tale, the book includes A Lyrical Poet, At the Mill, Civilization, The Treasure, Fray Genebro, The Peculiarities of a Blonde Girl, The Nurse, The Deceased, José Matías, The Perfection and The Gentle Miracle.

Is Adam and Eve in Paradise a retelling of the Bible?

Not exactly. The title tale uses the story of Eden but treats Adam as a frightened early human who learns to hunt and make fire. The narrator jokes about scholars, dates and the biblical account along the way.

What is the main message of the book?

Many tales suggest that real life, with its work, risk and imperfection, is better than empty comfort or pure ideals. Characters who chase perfection, wealth or holiness alone often lose what matters most.

Is it easy to read?

The tales are short and self-contained, with clear plots, vivid characters and a witty narrator. You can read them one at a time, and many have a simple storyline you can follow easily by ear.
