アーロンの杖 in short

Aaron's Rod follows a man who steps out of a good marriage on Christmas Eve and keeps stepping out of every arrangement that would hold him. He moves from the pit village to London, then to Italy, meeting people who each offer a way to live. He keeps his distance from all of them while wondering whether distance is freedom or just fear.

What アーロンの杖 is about

It is Christmas Eve in a Derbyshire mining village, and Aaron Sisson is setting up a tree for his two little girls. Their glass blue ball, once his own, smashes on the tiles. Hours later he walks out of his house and does not truly come back. What drives a decent man to leave his family without a reason he can name?

Aaron's Rod was written by D. H. Lawrence and published in 1922. It follows Aaron, a union man and gifted flute player, from the pits to the orchestra at Covent Garden and then south into Italy. The title comes from the rod of Aaron in the Bible that burst into flower, and here the rod is a flute. You get comic dinners, riots and sickbeds, and an argument about what it means to belong to yourself.

対象読者. Readers who enjoy novels about people leaving their lives behind, sharp talk at dinner tables, postwar Europe and flute music will love this book. It also suits those drawn to marriage and independence.

Christmas Eve cracks an ordinary home

The book opens on Christmas Eve, soon after the war. Aaron Sisson comes home late from a union meeting. He is thirty-two, fair haired and pleasant, and he built his house himself twelve years ago.

His daughters Millicent and Marjory beg him to set up a tree. His wife Lottie calls out orders from a bright, clean kitchen. Everything is warm and right, and yet Aaron looks at it as if from far away. Then Millicent pulls out the blue ball that once belonged to her father, tosses it too wildly, and it bursts on the tiles.

Aaron throws one bright shard into the fire and thinks that this is the end of it. Later he plays a carol on his flute and feels the lovely sound make him angrier. Lottie tells him to fetch candles and not to be selfish. He goes out into the dark.

A perfect home can still feel like a cage.

『アーロンの杖』についての質問

What is Aaron's Rod about?

It follows Aaron Sisson, a Derbyshire miners' union man and flute player, who leaves his wife and three daughters on Christmas Eve. He travels to London and then to Italy, meeting people who test his wish to belong only to himself.

What does the title Aaron's Rod mean?

In the Bible, the rod of Moses's brother Aaron sprouted and flowered. In the novel, Lilly jokes that Aaron's flute is his rod, a small thing that may bloom, and its fate follows the story to the last chapters.

Who is Rawdon Lilly in the book?

Lilly is a small, dark, quick writer who is poor and married to Tanny. He nurses Aaron through influenza and gives him an address in Italy. He is the voice of the book's ideas about self, love and power.

When was Aaron's Rod written and is it based on real life?

D. H. Lawrence published it in 1922, after the First World War. It is a novel, but it draws on postwar England and Italy, and some critics see real acquaintances behind several characters.

What is the main message of Aaron's Rod?

The novel asks whether a person can love without giving himself away. Through Aaron and Lilly it argues that each soul must develop from within, though it leaves open whether Aaron's solitude is freedom or flight.
