黄色い神 in short

A Yellow God follows one honest man from a swindle in London to a hidden kingdom in Africa. Alan Vernon walks away from easy money, keeps a golden idol he cannot explain, and carries it back to the people who worship it. On the road he meets dwarf archers, cannibals, a storm, and a priestess who has decided he belongs to her.

What 黄色い神 is about

Sir Robert Aylward sits in his teak-paneled office in the City of London and works out on the back of a letter that he is about to be very rich. His face looks like a wax mask, and it slips only when he is alone. He believes in nothing except the stupidity of the public. Yet on a marble stand in the shadows squats a golden idol with a woman's face, and he tells himself his luck began the day it came into the office.

A Yellow God is an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, who also wrote King Solomon's Mines and She. It joins the money market of London to a hidden gold kingdom in West Africa. You get a young engineer, a stubborn girl, a cold financier, a cruel priestess, and Jeekie, the funniest and shrewdest servant in the book.

対象読者. Readers who love lost kingdoms, buried gold, and perilous journeys will enjoy this. So will those who like loyal, funny sidekicks and love tested by greed and danger.

The story in 7 parts

An honest man learns what his partners sell

The story opens in the London office of Aylward and Champers-Haswell, a firm that promotes companies. Their newest scheme is Sahara Limited, a plan to flood the desert. The third partner, Major Alan Vernon, is a thin man weakened by fever. He is quick to trust and late to suspect evil in others.

When the newspaper called The Judge refuses the firm's advertisement, Sir Robert sends Alan to talk its old editor round. Mr. Jackson knew Alan's father. He tells Alan plainly that the firm lives by trickery and that the shares are priced far above their worth. He hands Alan a typed history of the firm's earlier companies and of the people who lost their money in them.

Alan reads it in the car back to the City. He sees that his earnings would come from trusting strangers. He walks into the granite office and says he is leaving. His partners suspect a trick.

Before he goes, Sir Robert offers seventeen thousand pounds for the golden idol, which is worth perhaps a hundred as metal. The money would save Yarleys, the old Vernon house. Alan looks into the idol's glittering eyes and refuses. He cannot say why. He walks into the mist feeling light as a boy.

On the bus he remembers what he has thrown away, and that he loves his cousin Barbara, an heiress. A clear conscience feels wonderful for an evening, and the bills come the next morning.
