緋色の研究 in short
A Study in Scarlet is a story of two lives meeting. Dr. John Watson, a wounded army surgeon, and Sherlock Holmes, the world's only consulting detective, move into rooms at Baker Street.
What 緋色の研究 is about
How much can you tell about a stranger in a single glance? Sherlock Holmes says you can read his trade, his past, even the country where he was wounded. He proves it within minutes of meeting Dr. John Watson, a worn-out army surgeon home from war with a damaged shoulder and no friends.
A Study in Scarlet is the novel that introduced both men to readers. Watson tells of sharing rooms at 221B Baker Street and of a case that begins with a dead man in an empty house and one German word written on the wall in red.

A wounded doctor finds a strange new lodger
The story opens with a lonely man looking for a place to live. Dr. John Watson went out to India and Afghanistan as an army surgeon. At the battle of Maiwand a bullet shattered his shoulder. Then fever nearly killed him, and he was shipped home with a small daily income and nobody waiting for him.
In London he drifts and spends too much in a hotel on the Strand. At the Criterion Bar a young man named Stamford, who once worked under him at Barts hospital, taps him on the shoulder. Watson says he needs cheaper rooms, and Stamford mentions a man in the hospital laboratory who wants someone to share his lodgings. He adds a warning. Sherlock Holmes is an excellent chemist, but a little too scientific.
At the laboratory Holmes leaps up with a cry of joy. He has found a test that detects blood in a stain. Then he shakes Watson's hand and says, You have been in Afghanistan, I see. Watson is astonished, and Holmes will not explain.
Before they agree to share rooms, the two men swap their worst habits. Holmes plays the violin and goes silent for days. Watson keeps a bulldog and hates noise.
Two people who confess their faults first start a partnership on honest ground.

How it ends (spoiler)
Holmes's arrested suspect is the cab driver Jefferson Hope, who admits to both killings. He tells how Drebber and Stangerson destroyed Lucy and her father, and how he hunted them across two continents. That night his heart condition ends his life in his cell. The newspapers give the credit to Gregson and Lestrade, and Watson decides to publish the true account.

『緋色の研究』についての質問
What is A Study in Scarlet about?
It follows Dr. Watson as he moves in with Sherlock Holmes and joins him on a murder case in London that begins with a dead man in an empty house. The second half goes to Utah and tells an earlier story of love and danger.
Is A Study in Scarlet the first Sherlock Holmes story?
Yes. It is the first book in which Holmes and Watson appear. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it in the 1880s, and it first appeared in print in 1887. Readers watch the two men meet and agree to share rooms.
What does Rache mean in A Study in Scarlet?
Rache is the German word for revenge. It is written in blood on a wall in the empty house. Lestrade thinks it is the start of the name Rachel, but Holmes quickly corrects him.
Why is it called A Study in Scarlet?
Holmes uses the phrase for the case. He says the scarlet thread of murder runs through the colorless skein of life, and that a detective's task is to unravel it and show every inch of it.
Is A Study in Scarlet easy to read?
It is approachable. The chapters are short, Watson tells the story in a warm, plain voice, and the clues are explained as the case goes along. The second half reads like a fast adventure.
