ビリー・ゴート・ヒルのロマンス in short
This is a love story, but it is also a story about a hill. Thornwood stands above, Bean Alley lies near the dump heap, and a bright, brave girl keeps walking between them. A single afternoon of riding ties her to Donald Morley and to a little boy who cannot speak.
What ビリー・ゴート・ヒルのロマンス is about
Would you ride a half-broken colt toward a railroad crossing just to win a race? Miss Lady Carsey does, on a bright Sunday in a Kentucky spring, and that one gallop changes her whole life.
On a hill outside a Kentucky city stands Thornwood, a shabby and loved old mansion. Below lies Bean Alley, where poor families live beside the dump heap.

A Kentucky spring and a motherless girl
The book opens on Thornwood, the old Carsey mansion on Billy-goat Hill. Colonel Bob Carsey sits on the porch making a mint julep and bellowing for his servant Jimpson, who is late with the ice.
The heart of the house is the Colonel's daughter, called Miss Lady. Her mother died when she was born, so the Colonel has been father, mother and playmate ever since. She can fish, ride and shoot as well as any man in the county. A boarding school could not hold her, so she does her sums with a stick in river sand. What marks her out is simple. She is usually happy.
Then Donald Morley, a rich young man from the city, keeps turning up on the porch. He claims no girl could handle the Colonel's wild colt, Prince, and the proud Colonel shouts for the saddle.
The opening shows a girl who is free, loved and sure of her world, and that makes everything after it matter.
