A shot from ambush starts the trouble
The story opens on a mountain road in South America. A bearded man crouches behind a rock with a rifle and waits for a rider. He fires, but the horse stumbles and the bullet kills the animal instead.
The shooter is James Stone, former co-owner of the Condor Mine. His target is his partner, Winthrop Crawford. Young Doctor Charlie Floyd saw the smoke and saw Stone creep away. He does not call the law, because he believes the man's mind is disturbed. He makes Stone swear to attempt no more crimes and to see a famous specialist in New York, Doctor Stephen Follansbee.
Crawford refuses to have his friend locked away. Floyd then writes to Follansbee and mentions that each partner has left everything to the other. He thinks he is being thorough, but he hands a schemer what he needs.

Hours later, Crawford and Stone clasp hands in Nick's study, and their broken friendship is mended.
