Who Arthur Huntingdon is

Arthur Huntingdon is handsome, witty, and skilled at winning Helen's attention through flattery and teasing. Her aunt warns her against him, but Helen believes she sees goodness beneath his careless behaviour.

After they marry, they live at his estate, Grassdale Manor, and enjoy a brief period of happiness. His restlessness, drinking, and constant wish for company soon give Helen reasons for concern.

Arthur Huntingdon and the others in the story

Huntingdon prefers drinking and gambling with his friends to spending time with Helen. He mocks her seriousness and faith, while his open flirtation with Lady Lowborough causes her growing pain.

His treatment of their young son makes Helen's concern more urgent. He gives the boy wine, teaches him to swear, and laughs when the child copies his habits.

How Arthur Huntingdon changes

Through Helen's diary, Huntingdon appears first as an appealing suitor and then as an increasingly selfish husband. The change lies partly in Helen's understanding, as she stops explaining away the behaviour she observes. Her hope of reforming him gives way to the need to protect herself and her child.
