Who Mr Bruff is
Mr Bruff is a careful, dry-minded lawyer who knows the Verinder family well. He is also one of the narrators who give their own accounts of the missing diamond.
His voice is dry and exact, distinct from Betteredge's warmth and Miss Clack's certainty about her own goodness. He offers a sober view of the legal side of the affair, rather than the whole story.
Mr Bruff and the others in the story
Mr Bruff watches over Rachel Verinder's interests and worries about her future.
His account helps readers see the family and its acquaintances from another point of view. Like the other narrators, he contributes only part of the picture that readers must assemble.
