Who Baltus Van Tassel is
Baltus Van Tassel is a prosperous Dutch farmer whose household welcomes visits from the schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. His only daughter, Katrina Van Tassel, is the heiress to a fine farm.
He is easygoing and fond of Katrina, while his wife keeps busy with her spinning wheel. The farm's full barns, fruit trees and crowded yard give a clear picture of his wealth.
Baltus Van Tassel and the others in the story
Baltus's property helps explain why Ichabod takes such an interest in courting Katrina. Ichabod admires her charms, but the land and its abundance especially stir his appetite and ambition.
Looking over the livestock, Ichabod imagines meals, then pictures selling the farm and buying land in the west. A party at the Van Tassel farm brings together food, dancing and ghost stories, with both suitors present.
