Who Elizabeth Elliot is
Elizabeth Elliot is the eldest of Sir Walter Elliot's three daughters and takes the place of mistress at Kellynch Hall. Her father is a widowed baronet whose pride in his appearance and family standing shapes the household. Elizabeth shares his pride, while his debts force the family to leave their home and let it to tenants.
Elizabeth Elliot and the others in the story
Elizabeth offers little warmth to Anne, the quiet middle sister whose kindness and good sense receive little attention at home. The contrast between the sisters helps show the difference between social standing and personal worth. In Bath, Elizabeth and Sir Walter are busy making a figure in society, while Anne also visits her poor, unwell friend Mrs Smith.
