Who Sisa is

Sisa is a poor woman whose life centers on her two young sons, Basilio and Crispin. Her husband is a gambler who takes what little the family has. The small moments when she and her children eat together matter deeply to her.

Sisa and the others in the story

Basilio and Crispin ring bells and help the priest as sacristans in the church. When Crispin is falsely accused of stealing two coins, he is beaten, and Basilio cannot stop it. At home, Sisa prepares a small meal and waits, certain that her sons have been good boys.

How Sisa changes

Sisa's ordinary hopes give way to fear as she searches for her children. Soldiers come to her house, and she is shamed in front of her neighbors. Under the strain, her mind begins to give way, and she wanders near the town, singing and searching.

Her story shows the harm that an unjust accusation can bring upon a family without power. Through Sisa, the novel brings colonial oppression into the intimate world of a mother and her children.
