Who Newman Noggs is
Newman Noggs is a fallen gentleman who works as clerk to Ralph Nickleby, a wealthy London moneylender. Ragged and often half drunk, he has fallen far from his earlier position in life. Yet he sees what Ralph is doing and quietly takes the side of the Nicklebys.
What Newman Noggs wants
Newman works to protect the Nickleby family from the man who employs him. When he hears what Ralph has planned for Kate, he begins working for her in secret. His help contrasts with Ralph's habit of treating his own relations as opportunities for profit.
Newman Noggs and the others in the story
Newman's position places him close to Ralph, but his loyalty lies with the family his master uses. Kate faces danger from Ralph's rich acquaintances, while her uncle puts his business interests before her safety. Newman recognises the threat and offers help where Ralph fails to offer protection.
