The plot in six lines
Raised in Marygreen, Jude Fawley sees schoolmaster Richard Phillotson leave for Christminster and begins teaching himself Latin and Greek while working towards his own dream of study.
Arabella Donn tells Jude she is expecting a child, and they marry, but their incompatible hopes divide them and she leaves for Australia.
Jude moves to Christminster and works on college buildings, but his appeal for guidance receives advice to remain in his trade, while he falls for his cousin Sue Bridehead.
Sue marries Richard Phillotson but cannot bear living as his wife, and he eventually lets her leave, despite condemnation that costs him his teaching post.
Jude and Sue live together without marrying, but lose work and homes as neighbours judge them, before Little Father Time kills their children and takes his own life.
Overcome by grief and guilt, Sue returns to Phillotson and the church, while Jude returns to Arabella and dies young, ill and alone in Christminster, as the colleges celebrate nearby.
Themes
Class and education: Jude's learning and ambition cannot overcome the money, connections and social position that determine access to Christminster.
Marriage: Jude and Sue find that marriage binds people whose feelings and needs do not fit the roles expected of them.
Religion: Jude's sincere faith and Sue's questioning expose tensions between personal feeling, religious obedience and the church's authority over private life.
Social judgment: Neighbours, landlords and employers punish Jude and Sue for living together, turning private choices into threats to their livelihood.
Dreams and reality: Christminster promises Jude a life of learning, yet his work on its walls reveals the distance between belonging and exclusion.
