Far from the Madding Crowd, Chapter 29 — краткое содержание

Что происходит

1. The narrator describes Bathsheba’s love for Troy as a surrender of judgment, while Gabriel worries more about her danger than his rejection.
2. Meeting Bathsheba among the cornfields, Gabriel raises Boldwood’s courtship, and she declares her intention to refuse him.
3. Gabriel urges her to avoid Troy, but she defends his character and repeats his claim of attending church unnoticed.
4. Bathsheba orders Gabriel to leave the farm, then allows him to remain after he insists her affairs need his help.
5. At her request, Gabriel falls behind and sees Troy join her, then retreats to avoid overhearing them.
6. Gabriel examines the church entrance and finds ivy across it, disproving Troy’s account of using that door.

На что обратить внимание

Gabriel makes Bathsheba’s trust the central issue. Her refusal to accept his warning contrasts with the evidence he finds against Troy’s account.
