Who Count Dracula is

Count Dracula lives in a ruined castle high in the Carpathian Mountains. He first appears as a courteous host, speaking perfect English and carrying Jonathan Harker's heavy bags with surprising ease. Yet his cold handshake, strange habits and absence during daylight begin to trouble his guest.

What Count Dracula wants

Dracula wants to leave his mountain home and settle among the crowds of London. He buys Carfax, a property near London, and questions Harker closely about English customs, geography and law. His library of English books and his attention to speech show how carefully he prepares to blend in.

Count Dracula and the others in the story

Jonathan Harker comes to the castle as a solicitor helping Dracula arrange his business in England. Their apparently polite relationship changes as Harker discovers locked doors and realises that he cannot leave. Through Harker's diary, Dracula becomes a threatening presence whose actions reveal more than his courteous words.

Best-known lines
