Who Unferth is
Unferth sits at Hrothgar's feet and speaks against Beowulf during the feast at Heorot. Driven by envy, he challenges the newcomer's reputation before the gathered warriors. He claims that Beowulf lost a swimming race against Breca, turning an old adventure into a public insult.
Unferth and the others in the story
Beowulf answers Unferth by describing storms, cold water and sea monsters during the swim. He then challenges Unferth's own courage, pointing to Grendel's continued attacks on the hall. Their exchange shows how reputation depends on public words as well as brave deeds.
How Unferth changes
Unferth is not a simple villain, since his challenge also tests Beowulf within the customs of the warrior hall. Later, at the haunted mere, he lends Beowulf a famous sword called Hrunting. Beowulf accepts the gift graciously, and their earlier hostility gives way to a quiet moment of reconciliation.
