Who Danglars is

Danglars works as the accountant aboard the Pharaon, the ship on which Edmond Dantès serves as first mate. While the shipowner promises Edmond command, Danglars resents the young sailor's good fortune and wants his place.

What Danglars wants

Danglars sees Edmond's stop at Elba as a chance to make an innocent act look like treason. He writes an anonymous letter accusing Edmond of carrying a message from Napoleon to supporters in Paris. He disguises his handwriting with his left hand, and Fernand Mondego agrees to deliver the accusation.

How Danglars changes

Years later, Danglars is a wealthy banker in Paris, but money still dominates his concerns. His fortune depends on public confidence, making the trust he commands a possible source of weakness. The Count approaches the men who wronged Edmond through favors and offers of help, rather than striking openly.

Danglars and the others in the story

Danglars and Fernand share an enemy in Edmond, though their reasons for wanting him removed are different. Danglars wants Edmond's position, while Fernand wants Mercédès, the woman Edmond plans to marry.
