Who Caderousse is
Caderousse belongs to Edmond's everyday world in Marseille, where he works as a tailor and lives nearby. He is fond of drink, weak in his choices, and easily tempted by money.
When Danglars prepares the accusation against Edmond, Caderousse is present and half drunk. He understands enough to recognize the danger, but he does nothing to stop the plot.
What Caderousse wants
Caderousse wants to avoid trouble, and that wish matters more to him than speaking up for Edmond. Unlike Danglars, who wants Edmond's position, or Fernand, who wants Mercédès, he stays silent to protect himself. His part in the betrayal shows how cowardice can help other people's envy become harmful.
Caderousse and the others in the story
Later, Caderousse is an innkeeper whose circumstances have worsened, and money still tempts him. The Count approaches him in disguise and learns details of the wrong done to Edmond. Their meetings connect the Count's patient search for knowledge with Caderousse's knowledge of the betrayal.
