Kobieta-abbé in short

The Woman Abbé follows one young Parisian woman from a single church service to the heart of a seminary. Pity becomes love, love becomes a daily habit, and the habit becomes a plan. She confesses with her voice disguised, dresses as a man, serves at his altar, loses her friend and her grandmother, and enters his seminary as Sainte-Alba.

What Kobieta-abbé is about

Picture a Paris church so crowded that women stand two rows deep around the altar. They have come to see a young priest whose heart, people whisper, was broken by a flirt. Among them is Agathe, who came only to please her grandmother. Then the priest turns to face the people, loses his senses, and has to be revived with her smelling bottle.

That is how The Woman Abbé begins. It is a short novel in letters by Sylvain Maréchal, a French writer who died in 1803. Nearly every letter comes from Agathe, who writes to her married friend Zoé. You get a love story with a daring premise, a lively heroine who argues with her own conscience, and a close look at church ceremonies in old Paris.

Dla kogo. Readers who love letters, bold heroines, and love stories with surprising premises will enjoy this novel. It suits those drawn to eighteenth century Paris and the friendship between a daring girl and her worried friend.

The story in 8 parts

A first Mass draws Agathe to a broken priest

The story opens with a note. Agathe tells her friend Zoé that she cannot visit tomorrow, because she must go to a first Mass with her grandmother. Her tone is light, and she expects to be bored.

The next letter changes the mood. The church is packed, mostly with women. A young woman whispers the reason. The new priest, Saint-Almont, adored a woman who played with him, and now he is giving up the world. Agathe pushes close to the altar to see the sacrifice.

She sees a young man with a lovely face, lowered eyes, and unsteady legs. At the first greeting to the people, he looks up for an instant and nearly collapses. Agathe is quickest to offer her smelling bottle. Afterward she asks his close friend whether the priesthood is truly his choice. The friend answers only that an honorable man keeps his commitments. That tells her the young priest is resigned, not convinced.

Agathe goes home and cannot sleep. Love begins here through pity and curiosity, not through any plan. She starts as a spectator and becomes a participant before she notices.

Sympathy for a suffering person can slip into attachment before anyone has agreed to it.

How it ends (spoiler)

Agathe tells Saint-Almont the truth in the seminary's country grove. He keeps his duty, sends her away, and she flees, meaning to end her life. She sleeps in a quarry, where a bitter philosopher named Timon finds her, frightens her into fainting, and then shelters her. He offers her a new life in America, but she refuses, weakening day by day. Zoé returns and finds her, and Agathe dies in her friend's arms. Timon saves Saint-Almont's life among the Iroquois, and Saint-Almont later leaves the priesthood.
