The Iliad in short
The Iliad covers a few weeks in the tenth year of the Trojan War. A king takes a prize from his best warrior, the warrior withdraws, and the Greeks begin to lose. Hector drives them back to their ships, and the question becomes whether one man's anger can ever be undone.
What The Iliad is about
What happens when the best fighter in an army decides that his own honour matters more than the army itself? That question opens the Iliad, and the answer costs thousands of lives. The poem begins in the tenth year of the siege of Troy, with a plague, a quarrel and a king who takes a prize that is not his to take.
Homer, the ancient Greek poet, composed this epic in verse to be sung aloud, which is why it is full of repeated phrases and rolling comparisons. It covers only a few weeks of the war, yet the whole story of Troy stands behind it. You get the shape of the whole poem here, from the plague in the Greek camp to the shield forged for Achilles. Along the way you meet Hector, who fights for his family, and Agamemnon, who cannot bear to lose face.
Dla kogo. Readers who love war stories, family loyalty and the clash of pride and duty will enjoy this epic. It also suits those curious about the roots of Western storytelling, Greek myth and the sorrow behind glory.

A priest's insult starts a plague and a quarrel
The poem opens with an insult to a god. Chryses, a priest of Apollo, comes to the Greek camp with a rich ransom to free his daughter Chryseis. The other Greeks want to respect the priest and accept it. Agamemnon, who commands the army, refuses and drives the old man away with threats.
Chryses walks alone along the shore and prays that Apollo will punish the Greeks. The god comes down in a dark rage, his silver bow ringing. He strikes mules and dogs first, then the men. For nine days the funeral fires burn along the beach. On the tenth day Achilles calls an assembly, and the seer Calchas says the girl must go home without ransom.
Agamemnon rages, but he agrees to give her up. In her place he vows to seize Briseis, the prize of Achilles, and Achilles reaches for his sword. Minerva holds him back by the hair, and he sheathes the blade. He swears that one day the Greeks will long for him and not find him. A leader who guards his own pride at the cost of others creates the very enemy he cannot afford.

Old King Priam, guided by Mercury, enters the Greek camp at night and begs Achilles to return his son. Achilles, thinking of his own father, weeps with him, gives back the body and suspends fighting until the twelfth day. Troy mourns Hector and buries him.

Pytania o The Iliad
What is the Iliad about?
The Iliad tells of a few weeks in the tenth year of the Trojan War. Its subject is the anger of Achilles after Agamemnon takes his prize, and the toll that quarrel takes on Greeks and Trojans.
Who is Achilles and why is he angry?
Achilles is the best Greek fighter, son of the sea goddess Thetis and the king Peleus. He is angry because Agamemnon takes Briseis, the prize the army gave him, and so dishonours him in public.
Is the Iliad a true story?
The Iliad is a poem, not a history. It tells of a war at Troy, a real site in modern Turkey, but its events belong to myth. It was composed in ancient Greek and shaped by oral tradition.
Is the Iliad easy to follow?
The story is driven by clear moments such as a quarrel, a duel, a farewell and a night raid. Repeated phrases mark each character, and speeches are vivid, so a listener can follow who is who without effort.
What is the main message of the Iliad?
The poem shows that honour, pride and anger shape the lives of heroes, and that war brings grief to both sides. It asks what glory is worth when life is brief, and shows respect between enemies.
