Katedra in short

The Cathedral follows Durtal, a Paris convert, as he settles at Chartres beside an old priest and his saintly housekeeper. Under the guidance of Abbé Plomb he learns to read the building as a language, its crypt, its glass, its porches, its numbers, colours, flowers and beasts. Meanwhile his own soul is dry and restless.

What Katedra is about

What happens when a man who cannot pray well sits in a dark cathedral at five in the morning and watches the windows catch fire one by one? That is how The Cathedral opens. Durtal, a Paris writer who has come back to the Catholic faith, sits in the transept at Chartres.

J.-K. Huysmans wrote this novel at the end of the nineteenth century as one book in a series that follows Durtal toward the cloister. There is little plot. Instead a learned priest reads the building like a language. You gain a working key to Chartres, its porches, its glass and its crypt.

Dla kogo. Readers who love Gothic cathedrals, stained glass, medieval symbols and the inner life of a restless convert will find a companion here, along with anyone who enjoys sharp humour.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Durtal watches the cathedral wake at dawn

The book begins in the dark, at five in the morning, when Durtal crosses the windy square at Chartres and slips into the cathedral. The nave feels like a forest of black trunks. He sits against a pillar and waits for the Virgin to wake.

While he waits, his mind travels to La Salette and Lourdes. At La Salette peasant women climbed on their knees and glowed with simple faith. Lourdes seems to him to show God using the methods of modern publicity.

Then the light arrives. The windows emerge from the gloom, and Virgins appear in many places, black, tawny, pale or white, so that Mary seems to belong to every race. The aisles stay dark, and the light brightens toward the altar. Peasants kiss her pedestal and pray like lovers, not complainers.

Look first at how a holy place is lit, because the light is part of its message.

  • Durtal A Paris writer and recent convert who settles at Chartres, studies the cathedral and struggles with dry prayer and a pull toward the cloister.
  • Abbé Gévresin An aging, gentle priest and Canon who guides Durtal as his confessor and laughs kindly at his complaints.
  • Madame Bavoil The Abbé's housekeeper, a former pilgrim who speaks of saints as friends and keeps a vegetable garden in the Bishop's grounds.
  • Abbé Plomb A learned young priest of the cathedral who teaches Durtal the language of symbols and has visited the monastery at Solesmes.
  • Madame Mesurat Durtal's talkative servant, who stands over his meals and piles dust into corners instead of sweeping it away.
  • Monseigneur des Mofflaines The new Bishop of Chartres, old and ill, who brings Abbé Gévresin to the town and is rarely seen.

How it ends (spoiler)

The book closes as Durtal reviews all that Chartres has given him, his study of symbolism, the chant, the glass and the crypt. Urged by his friends, he prepares to leave for the Benedictine monastery at Solesmes. Before going, he looks at the cathedral once more and sums it up as a living image of the Virgin, her towers raised like arms in prayer.
