They that have power to hurt, and will do none,That do not do the thing they most do show,Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow; They rightly do inherit heaven’s graces,And husband nature’s riches from expense; They are the lords and owners of their faces,Others, but stewards of their excellence. The summer’s flower is to the summer sweet,Though to itself, it only live and die,But if that flower with base infection meet,The basest weed outbraves his dignity:For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;Lilies that fester, smell far worse than weeds.
Those who have the power to hurt but choose not to, who do not act on what their appearance most suggests, who stir others but remain like stone themselves—unmoved, cold, and slow to give in to temptation—rightly receive heaven's blessings and keep nature's riches from being wasted. They are the masters and owners of their expressions; others merely manage the beauty entrusted to them.
The summer flower gives sweetness to summer, though for itself it only lives and dies. But if that flower catches a foul disease, the lowest weed surpasses its former glory. For the sweetest things turn sourest through their actions. Rotting lilies smell far worse than weeds.
