Questions about the Book of Enoch
Contents
How many books are in the Book of Enoch?
Three, and a fourth work beside them: 1 Enoch (the Ethiopic Book of Enoch, 108 chapters), 2 Enoch (the Slavonic Book of the Secrets of Enoch), 3 Enoch (the Hebrew Book of Enoch) and the Book of Giants. This volume holds all of them, plus ten more ancient texts: fourteen in all.
Which Book of Enoch is this: 1, 2 or 3? Is it complete?
All of them. The volume holds 1 Enoch (all 108 chapters), 2 Enoch, 3 Enoch and the Book of Giants, plus ten more ancient texts. Every text is listed under What’s inside. The Book of Giants is reconstructed from Dead Sea Scrolls fragments.
Is it safe for a Christian to read the Book of Enoch?
Yes, and you are in good company asking. Jude 1:14–15 in the New Testament quotes 1 Enoch, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church still reads it as scripture. Each text opens with an introduction, so you always know what you are reading.
Are you saying the Book of Enoch belongs in the Bible?
No. We do not tell you what belongs in your Bible. Jude quotes it, fragments were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church kept the complete text. Whether it belongs in a canon is a question for your church. Whether you may read it is not.
Is the English easy to read?
Yes. The English is plain, without the old "thee and thou". Judge it yourself: it is free up to chapter 2.
