この本について
What if you act against your own happiness just to prove you are free?
In Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Notes from the Underground, an unnamed retired official writes from his lonely corner of St Petersburg. He is forty, proud, bitter, and hungry for respect he cannot bear to ask for. He wants readers close enough to hear his confession—and far enough away to despise.
His argument challenges the belief that reason and self-interest can build a perfect society. Then he turns to his younger self: a poor clerk caught in an obsession over an officer’s slight and drawn toward Zverkov’s farewell dinner. Among people he dislikes, his longing for recognition meets his fierce need to resist.

A man too aware of himself cannot act
The book opens with a confession that sounds like a dare. The narrator says he is a sick man, a spiteful man and an unattractive man. He refuses to see a doctor, and he admits the reason is spite, even though he knows he only hurts himself.
In his office days he enjoyed being rude to the people who came to his desk. Then he stops himself. He was never truly spiteful, he says. He was scaring sparrows for fun, and a cup of sweet tea could have calmed him.

What is Notes from the Underground about?
It follows a bitter former clerk in Petersburg who explains, in a confessional voice, why he rejects reason and comfort. Then he tells a story from his youth about a feud, a dinner and a young woman named Liza.
Who is the narrator of Notes from the Underground?
He is an unnamed forty-year-old retired minor official who lives alone in a small room in Petersburg. He is often called the Underground Man, because he says he has lived underground, cut off from people, for forty years.
What does the Palace of Crystal mean in the book?
It stands for a perfect, rational world planned by science, where every need is met and nothing can be doubted. The narrator fears it because it would leave no room for independent choice or personal whim.
