対象読者

Readers who love witty, secretive first-person narrators will enjoy this novel. So will lovers of stories about women finding their way in foreign countries, and of quiet emotion and ghostly touches.

本の内容

Picture a small girl in a black dress, sitting on a footstool in a dark corner and weeping so quietly that nobody hears. Lucy Snowe sees her, and Lucy pays attention to everything.

Villette was written by Charlotte Brontë and published in 1853. It draws on her own time as a teacher in Brussels, though the city is renamed and the country is called Labassecour. It tells of a plain, watchful Englishwoman with no money and no family who makes a life for herself anyway, and you hear how a woman who expects nothing learns to want things.

重要なポイント 1/10

At Bretton a lonely child arrives

Lucy Snowe opens her story at Bretton, the calm home of her godmother, Mrs. Bretton. Lucy loves the quiet rooms and the lack of excitement. Mrs. Bretton has a son, Graham, a handsome boy of sixteen.

One day a small crib appears in Lucy's bedroom. The guest is Paulina Home, called Polly, a girl of six whose mother has died.

Then Polly sees a man in the street from a window and runs out like an arrow. It is her father, who could not leave without seeing her once more. Soon she is calm, and later she serves Graham his tea with great dignity.

Lucy says she herself was calm through all of this. Polly loves hard and shows it, and Lucy does neither.

The takeaway is that Lucy begins as a watcher, and watching is how she protects herself.

『ヴィレット』についての質問

What is Villette about?

Villette tells of Lucy Snowe, a poor Englishwoman who goes alone to a foreign city and finds work at a girls' school. There she faces loneliness, a watchful headmistress, an old friend and a sharp-tongued professor.

Who is the narrator of Villette?

The story is told by Lucy Snowe herself, looking back from old age. She is reserved and observant, often says little about her own feelings, and sometimes speaks straight to the reader.

Is Villette a true story?

It is a novel, published in 1853. Charlotte Brontë drew on her own time as a teacher in Brussels, and the city of Villette and the land of Labassecour are her disguised versions of Belgium.

Who is the nun in Villette?

A local legend says a nun was buried alive beneath a pear tree in the school garden. Lucy and others see a figure in black and white, and the sightings grow more frequent as the story goes on.

What is the main message of Villette?

The book shows how a woman without money or family can build a self-respecting life by her own work, and how strong feeling can live quietly behind a calm face.
