本の内容
What would you give to hear that you are loved? In the first scene of King Lear, an old king of Britain puts a price on it. He asks his three daughters to say, before the whole court, how much they love him, and he promises the biggest share of his kingdom to the one who says it best.
The Tragedy of King Lear is a play by William Shakespeare, written in the early 1600s. It follows an old king who gives away his crown, a loyal earl exiled for plain speech, and a second family, Gloucester and his two sons, whose troubles mirror the king's.

A king trades his kingdom for flattery
Lear opens by announcing that he is done with ruling. He has cut Britain into three parts, and he wants to hand them to younger hands while he crawls toward death. First he sets a test before the court. The daughter who says she loves him most will receive the richest share.
Goneril, the eldest, says she loves him more than sight, space and freedom, more than life itself. Regan says her sister has not gone far enough. Each speech earns a fine third of the kingdom. Cordelia, the youngest and the favourite, listens and says to herself that she will love, and be silent. When her turn comes, she answers with one word, nothing.
Lear warns her that nothing comes from nothing and tells her to try again. She says she loves him as a daughter must, no more and no less. If her sisters love him completely, she asks, why do they have husbands? Lear hears only coldness. He swears she is a stranger to him and hands her share to the husbands of her sisters. He keeps the name of king and a hundred knights, whom his daughters must house in turn.
Lear mistakes loud words for love, and that one mistake starts every sorrow that follows.

『リア王』についての質問
What is King Lear about?
An aging king of Britain divides his kingdom among his daughters according to who says she loves him most. He banishes the one who answers plainly, and the two who flatter him strip away his power, driving him into madness and exposure.
Who are Goneril, Regan and Cordelia?
They are Lear's three daughters. Goneril is the eldest and married to Albany, Regan is the second and married to Cornwall, and Cordelia is the youngest, who refuses to flatter her father and marries the King of France.
What is the subplot with Gloucester and his sons?
The Earl of Gloucester has a legitimate son, Edgar, and an illegitimate son, Edmund. Edmund forges a letter and lies to turn his father against Edgar, so a second family breaks apart in the same way as the king's.
Is King Lear based on a true story?
The play draws on an old British legend of a king and his daughters, but it is a work of imagination. Shakespeare wrote it for the stage in the early 1600s, and it is not a record of actual events.
Is King Lear worth reading today?
Yes, readers find that its questions about aging parents, family loyalty, flattery and power feel current. The scenes are short and vivid, with strong speakers like the Fool and Poor Tom, so the play is rewarding to read or hear.
