Readers who love animal fables with real teeth, boys raised by wolves, jungle adventure, tales of India and the Arctic, and short stories paired with verse.

本の内容

What happens when a whole jungle runs dry and the tiger, the deer and the boy must drink side by side? The Second Jungle Book opens on that scene. Rudyard Kipling wrote these stories in the 1890s as a follow-up to his first book of Mowgli tales, and each one comes with its own poem.

Most tales follow Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves, as he grows into a young master of the forest. But the book also steps outside the jungle, to a Prime Minister turned holy man, a boastful crocodile and an Inuit boy in the Arctic dark. You get the substance of every tale, with the Law, the traps and the fights.

重要なポイント 1/11

A drought forces enemies to share water

The first tale, How Fear Came, begins with a failure of the rains. Ikki the Porcupine warns Mowgli that the wild yams are drying up, but the boy laughs. Baloo is wiser, and he fears the mohwa tree will not flower.

The mohwa never blooms. The pools crust over and the game grows thin as bones. When the Waingunga shrinks to a trickle, Hathi the elephant sees a dry ridge of rock rise in the stream. It is the Peace Rock, and he declares the Water Truce. Under the Law, it is death to kill at a drinking place during the Water Truce. So tiger, bear, deer and pig all stand in the same shallows.

Then Shere Khan limps down and boasts that he has just killed a man, not for food but because he chose to. Hathi orders the Lame Tiger away from the water. When need is shared by all, even natural enemies keep a common law.

『ジャングル・ブック 第二巻』についての質問

What is The Second Jungle Book about?

It is a collection of tales and poems. Most follow Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, as he grows up. Others visit a Himalayan hermit, a river crocodile and an Inuit hunter in the Arctic.

Do I need to read The Jungle Book first?

It helps but is not required. Kipling recalls earlier events as he goes, and the stories stand on their own. You meet Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and Kaa with enough background to follow each tale.

What is the Law of the Jungle?

It is the set of rules the animals live by. It forbids killing at a drinking place during the Water Truce, protects the weak and teaches Pack loyalty. Kipling gives a poem of it, ending with the word Obey.

Who are Kaa, Hathi and Bagheera?

Kaa is a huge, wise rock python. Hathi is the wild elephant who is truly master of the Jungle. Bagheera is a black panther, born in a king's cage, who bought Mowgli's place in the Pack.

Is The Second Jungle Book a children's book?

It reads well for all ages. The tales are clear and vivid, with animal speech, adventure and verse, though some scenes of fighting and hunting are rendered plainly and may suit older children and adults.
