Who Governor Bellingham is
Governor Bellingham leads the Boston colony, where Hester Prynne faces public punishment for having a child outside marriage. He stands above her with the ministers as she holds her baby before the watching town.
His stern presence connects Hester's punishment with the authority of the colony. He represents a society in which law and religion work closely together to judge people's lives.
Governor Bellingham and the others in the story
Bellingham's concern about Pearl brings him into direct conflict with Hester's wish to keep her daughter. Hester visits his mansion to deliver gloves and plead against the possibility of losing her child.
At the mansion, Bellingham and Reverend John Wilson test Pearl on her religious knowledge. When her answer shocks the leaders, Arthur Dimmesdale argues that mother and child belong together. Bellingham gives way to the minister's argument, allowing Hester to keep Pearl.
